Renewing your TIE in Spain: steps, fee 790-012 and deadlines
The 60/90-day rule, the difference between renewing the permit and the card, the fingerprints appointment and what it really costs.

Renewing "the TIE" is actually TWO separate procedures, and mixing them up is mistake nº 1: first you renew the residence AUTHORIZATION (Extranjería, usually online via Mercurio), and only once you get a FAVOURABLE resolution do you renew the physical CARD (National Police, in person, with fingerprints).

Step by step

Check your renewal window
You can file the renewal of your authorization from 60 days before expiry and up to 90 days after. Within that window your status remains legal while it is processed (filing extends your previous authorization). Past the 90 days you risk a fine and even losing your residence.

Renew the authorization (Extranjería)
Gather the documents for your permit type (work: contract / employment record; etc.), pay fee 790-052 and file — nowadays usually online through the Mercurio platform with a digital certificate or Cl@ve, or at the Extranjería office. Keep the receipt: it is your legal proof while you wait.

Wait for the favourable resolution
Extranjería has a legal deadline of 3 months. You can track your file in "¿Cómo va lo mío?" on the electronic office. With the FAVOURABLE resolution in hand, the card phase starts: you have 1 month to request the new TIE.

Pay fee 790 code 012
Generate the form on the official Police website (link in Sources), tick the TIE category that applies to you (the system calculates the amount), and pay at a bank or via online banking. If you pay online, print the receipt with the NRC visible: without it the payment cannot be validated on appointment day.

Book a FINGERPRINTS appointment
On the extranjería appointment site (ICPPlus) pick your province and the procedure "POLICÍA — TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA)". It is the classic bottleneck: if there are no slots, try first thing in the morning, on weekdays, and across different police stations in your province.

Go to the police station with everything
On the day, bring: form EX-17 filled in and signed, proof of the paid 012 fee, valid passport, a recent ID photo (white background), the favourable resolution and your old TIE. They will take your fingerprints and give you a receipt.

Collect your new card
The card is usually ready in about 30 days (varies by province). Return to the same police station with the fingerprints receipt and your passport to collect it.
💡 Tips
- Photocopy EVERYTHING in duplicate and bring more documents than needed: better safe than sorry.
- Travelling outside Spain while renewing with an expired TIE? Request an Autorización de Regreso (return authorization) at the police station first.
- Use the fee receipt within ~90 days; if your appointment slips a lot or fees are updated in the BOE, you would need to generate a new one.
- If you are renewing into long-term residence, the 012 category (and amount) changes: tick it correctly in the generator.
⚠️ Watch out for
- Do not mix up the fees: 790-052 is for "applying" (paid when filing with Extranjería) and 790-012 for "collecting" (paid before fingerprints). Paying the wrong one gets your appointment rejected.
- Filing the renewal after the 90 days following expiry can mean a fine (≈ €500–1,000) and, with a long delay, loss of residence status.
- If you do not request the card within one month of the favourable resolution, you may face an administrative penalty.
FAQ
Can I work with an expired TIE while it is processed?
Yes, as long as you filed the renewal in time: the application extends the validity of your previous authorization. Always carry the filing receipt.
Can the renewal be done 100% online?
The AUTHORIZATION usually can (Mercurio). The CARD cannot: fingerprints and collection are in person at a police station, by appointment.
How much does it cost in total?
Roughly: fee 052 (≈€16–20) + fee 012 (≈€16–20) + ID photo (€5–10) + photocopies. Check current amounts in the official generator: they are updated via the BOE.
No fingerprint appointments in my province — what now?
Keep trying at different times (slots are often released early morning), try every enabled police station in your province, and avoid paying appointment resellers: the appointment is free.
